A U.S. jurisdiction
The territory follows U.S. federal law. U.S. citizens need no passport or work visa, the currency is the U.S. dollar and your credentials and retirement savings travel with you.
TeachUSVI is an independent guide for teachers, counselors and school professionals who want to work in the U.S. Virgin Islands. We turn scattered official information into clear steps — and help you certify, apply and relocate with confidence.

The same reasons the original teachusvi.net listed back in 2005 still hold today — a U.S. system, a multicultural community and a school system that needs committed professionals.

Students and families trace their roots across the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, Asia and the U.S. mainland — an extraordinary place to grow as an educator.
Elementary, K–8, junior high, high schools and technical/vocational programs across two districts mean room for many specialties and career paths.
Island schools have long recruited for special education, math, science, bilingual/ESL, career & technical education and related services.
Professional development, leadership roles and graduate study at the University of the Virgin Islands help you build a long-term career.
Beaches, reefs, hiking in a national park, festivals and year-round warmth: the classroom is only half the story.

The busy heart of the territory. Home to the capital, Charlotte Amalie, the main cruise port, the St. Thomas campus of the University of the Virgin Islands and the largest cluster of public schools in the St. Thomas–St. John district.
Best for: educators who want city energy, shopping, nightlife and quick flights to the mainland.
The largest island and the most rural: rolling hills, historic Danish towns in Christiansted and Frederiksted, farms, rainforest and a slower pace. St. Croix is its own school district with high schools, K–8 schools and a technical high school.
Best for: teachers who want more space, a strong local community and generally lower rents.
Around two-thirds of St. John is Virgin Islands National Park. Village life centres on Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, with a small public school population served within the St. Thomas–St. John district.
Best for: nature lovers comfortable with small-community living and higher housing costs.

U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel to or work in the USVI, although carrying one simplifies travel to neighbouring islands. Non-citizens need valid U.S. work authorization — the same as anywhere else in the United States.
Historically, island schools have recruited heavily for special education, mathematics, sciences, bilingual/ESL, career & technical education, music and related-service roles such as speech therapy and school nursing. See our In-Demand Roles guide.
