How the system works
Two districts, one department
Public schools in the territory are run by the Virgin Islands Department of Education and organized into two districts: St. Thomas–St. John and St. Croix. Each district has its own superintendent and central office, while certification is handled territory-wide by the Virgin Islands Board of Education.
In 2019 the St. Croix district reorganized several schools into a K–8 model, closing aging buildings and consolidating campuses. On St. Thomas, some schools were renamed or consolidated during post-hurricane recovery, and federal funds have supported major rebuilding projects.
